Midjourney has had no free trial since 2023 and still lives on subscriptions. Here are 7 real alternatives with prices checked in August 2026: ComfyUI the free one, Krea, Flora, Magnific, Higgsfield, Runway, and Imaginode, which is ours. Plus the cases where you should stay on Midjourney anyway.
why so many people want out, and why some of them are wrong
'Midjourney alternative' is one of the most searched queries in AI creation, and the reasons are always the same three. No free trial since 2023, so you pay before you can judge. A subscription counted in GPU hours that nobody really understands. And a single house look: gorgeous, but when your client wants something else, you are stuck.
Before the list, some sincere advice: if what you love is precisely the Midjourney aesthetic, stay. That signature look exists nowhere else, 'Midjourney style' imitations on other models disappoint, and unlimited Relax mode at $30 a month remains unbeatable for very high image volumes. 1. ComfyUI: the free alternative, the real one
The only genuinely free alternative on this list, no asterisk: ComfyUI is open source and runs Flux, Stable Diffusion and dozens of other models on your own machine. Zero subscription, zero credits, unlimited images, forever.
The cost lives elsewhere. You need a serious GPU, an install, updates, and evenings spent figuring out why yesterday's downloaded workflow will not launch today. The learning curve is a wall: it is a node-graph tool designed by technicians for technicians.
Verdict: if 'free' is your number one criterion and the technical side does not scare you, stop reading here, the answer is ComfyUI. If you value your evenings, keep going.
2. Krea: real-time exploration, generous free plan
Krea attacks Midjourney where it is weak: interactive exploration. The real-time canvas regenerates the image while you draw or move elements, a sensation Midjourney's prompt-then-wait loop cannot offer. Over 60 models in the catalog, including video and upscaling.
Prices checked in July 2026: a free plan with 100 compute units per day, no credit card, then $9, $35 or $70 a month. The free tier excludes commercial use, but for building skills it is one of the most generous on the market, exactly what Midjourney refuses to offer.
The caveat: Krea is an exploration studio more than a production chain. For sketching it is excellent. For rolling out ten consistent variants of a campaign, the structure is not there.
3. Flora: the node canvas built for teams
Flora replaces Midjourney's 'one prompt, one image' logic with a canvas where your process is visible and editable, with over 60 models including Nano Banana 2, Veo 3.1 and Kling. Real-time collaboration up to 8 seats is its true signature: several creatives on the same canvas, shared assets, an API.
Checked in August 2026: free to try, but barely (3 active projects, around 17 generations, no video), then $18 per seat per month on Starter, $50 on Pro, $200 on Max. Per-seat billing tells you the target: studios and teams more than solo creators.
It is the closest competitor to our own product, and we published a dedicated head-to-head. If you work with others on shared projects, Flora belongs on your shortlist.
4. Magnific: when you need more than generation
The former Freepik has a blunt argument against the Midjourney subscription: for a comparable price (€16 a month for Premium, checked in August 2026), you get multi-model generation (Flux, Seedance, Kling, Veo, Ideogram) plus 250 million stock assets, templates, and some of the best upscalers on the market.
For a generalist designer who used to juggle a stock subscription and a generation subscription, merging the two budgets is hard to argue with.
The caveats: an in-house credit scale that resists comparison (240,000 yearly credits whose real value depends on the model used) and limited workflow depth, since you generate image by image. Our full math is here.
5. Higgsfield: for short-form creators
Higgsfield does not try to beat Midjourney on the polished image, but on short-form production speed: camera effect presets, recent models (Seedance, Kling 3.0, Nano Banana), and an in-house model, Soul. The target is the TikTok/Reels creator who wants three variations of a shot before noon.
Checked in August 2026: €19 a month on Starter for 270 non-rollover credits and a restricted model selection, no free plan listed, and temporary 'unlimited' windows on models the platform picks. A 5-second Seedance 2.0 Fast video costs about 18 credits there.
The billing model demands vigilance: expiring credits, rotating unlimited. If your volume is steady, fine; otherwise run the numbers before signing.
6. Runway: the editors' exit route
If you are leaving Midjourney because your needs drifted from image to video, Runway is the name everyone will whisper. Gen-4.5 produces solid video, the editing suite is real, and the training ecosystem is the richest on the market.
Checked on August 13, 2026: $12 a month billed annually on Standard, 625 monthly credits that expire, a trial limited to 125 credits once, about two Gen-4.5 videos. So the same complaint you had about Midjourney applies: you pay a flat fee, not your actual usage.

7. Imaginode: our answer, judge it on numbers
Our angle against Midjourney comes down to two breaks with its model. First: multi-model. On the same canvas, the same idea runs on Flux, Seedream, Imagen, Recraft or Nano Banana, side by side, without changing subscriptions. When a client says 'less stylized, more photo', you switch a node, not a provider.
Second: full pay-per-use. No mandatory subscription, credits from €15 that never expire, the exact cost printed on every button before you click (a Flux Schnell image: one cent; a 5-second Kling video: 26 cents), and automatic refunds on technical failures. Midjourney billing GPU hours even when the result is a dud feels dated to us.
