The free trial grants 125 credits, once, roughly two Gen-4.5 videos. One month of vacation, one delayed project, and the money paid evaporates. It is a gym membership applied to a creative tool.
This article is written by the maker of the first alternative on the list, Imaginode. That is said, that is owned, and every price cited is dated. We even end with the cases where staying on Runway is the right call.
1. Imaginode: the same model tiers, paid per use

5. ComfyUI: the free and open road, for technicians
The radical answer to subscriptions: open source, free, on your machine. Open-weights video models (Wan, LTX, Hunyuan and others) run in ComfyUI with per-node control no hosted tool matches. Zero credits, zero expiry, zero account.
The price is paid in hardware and evenings: local video demands a serious GPU, generation times run in minutes, and open model quality still trails closed models like Veo or Kling V3 on most uses. The gap narrows with every release, but it exists.
The right profile: an equipped technician, high volumes, a need for total control or absolute privacy. Everyone else will lose more time than they save money.
6. Going direct: Kling and friends without a middleman
Last option, often forgotten: most large video models have their own platform (Kling via Kwai, Hailuo via MiniMax, Dreamina on ByteDance's side). Going direct sometimes gets you the freshest features before anyone else.
The trade-offs recur: one interface per provider, one subscription or credit wallet per service, commercial usage terms to check case by case, and no way to chain models together. Three subscriptions for three models is Runway's problem times three.
