Sora Alternatives: What to Use Now That OpenAI Has Shut It Down

Looking for a Sora alternative is no longer a matter of taste. The web and mobile app has been closed since 26 April 2026, OpenAI announced the product wind-down on 21 July 2026, and the deprecated Sora 2 API had its removal scheduled for 24 September 2026. No ChatGPT plan or invite code brings consumer access back. Your prompts still work, though: they just need a different model.
What Sora 2 did well is a useful yardstick: natural-looking footage, synchronised audio generated with the picture, and a single prompt to get started. One criterion carried extra weight after what happened to Sora: depending on a single engine. When a tool sells one model and that model goes away, your whole workflow goes with it. The list mixes single-model and multi-model platforms and says which is which.
Why look for a Sora (OpenAI) alternative

Google Flow is Google's video workshop built around Veo 3.1, the model closest to Sora 2 for synchronised audio and natural motion. Its storytelling tools (storyboard, shot extension, scene ingredients) are very polished, and 50 free credits a day let you try it. Full access runs through a Google AI plan, from $7.99 a month (AI Plus, Veo 3.1 Fast) to $249.99 (AI Ultra), and tiers vary by country.
Kling AI is the most direct swap if you generated a lot on Sora: Kling 3.0 outputs 1080p with audio, and the free tier's 66 daily credits let you rerun your old prompts at no cost. Budget 12 credits per second at 1080p with audio, so about 120 credits for a 10 second clip. Plans run from $10 to $180 a month, and monthly credits vanish at the end of the cycle even if the month was quiet.
Runway suits people who used Sora inside a bigger production chain: Gen-4.5, Motion Brush, Director Mode and a post-production timeline, plus third-party models such as Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 and Seedance. Nothing else on this list goes as far once a shot has been generated. The trade-off: 5 seconds of Gen-4.5 costs 60 credits out of a 625 credit monthly Standard allowance, roughly ten videos, and those credits expire.
Luma Dream Machine has a recognisable signature on moving shots and tracking moves, and its Relaxed mode makes the $300 Ultra plan very cost-effective for continuous generation. For client work, aim for Plus at $30 a month: Lite carries a watermark and does not allow commercial use. On audio and prompt adherence, the two things Sora 2 did best, Veo 3.1 and Seedance 2.0 are often ahead.
Hailuo, MiniMax's video generator, is known for strong value and energetic camera movement, with a limited free tier to get started. Its pricing moves around: the Standard plan was recorded at $9.99, $12.99 and then $14.99 a month across 2025 and 2026, and monthly credits expire. If you are migrating an API integration, MiniMax charges $0.19 to $0.56 per clip with no middleman margin.
Start from what you actually did with Sora. Short shots with dialogue or ambient sound: try Veo 3.1 and Seedance 2.0 first, in Google Flow if you already pay for Google AI, in Imaginode if you would rather pay per shot.
