If you landed here, it is probably because half the search results for this query show screenshots, pricing tables and buttons that say "try Nano Banana 3". At best, those pages are describing Nano Banana 2 or Nano Banana Pro under another name. At worst, they are reselling access to a model that does not exist, with your card at the end of the funnel.
So this article is not going to sell you early access. In August 2025, an unnamed image model started appearing in LMArena's blind comparisons under the label nano-banana. Labs are allowed to test unannounced systems there behind an alias, long enough to collect real votes. That one crushed the field on image editing, and within days the alias became a viral joke, then a name everybody used. On 26 August 2025, Google confirmed it: the banana was Gemini 2.5 Flash Image.
Google then did something unusual. Instead of imposing the engineering name, it kept the joke. The next releases were officially called Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2, with the technical name in second position. That is why the numbering looks broken: it came from the internet, not from a product roadmap. A Nano Banana Pro shipping before a Nano Banana 2 only makes sense once you know where the name came from.
This history has a direct consequence for your search. Google's next image model will not necessarily be called Nano Banana 3. Its selling point was never raw beauty but obedience: it is a language model that outputs images, so it understands a plain-language editing instruction and modifies an existing photo without wrecking the face. On that ground it was a year ahead of everyone, and it is still the budget pick today.
Nano Banana Pro, otherwise known as Gemini 3 Pro Image, landed on 20 November 2025, two days after Gemini 3 Pro. It changed category: output up to 4K, text that is finally clean inside the image, complex compositions, and a rare ability to check facts through Google Search before generating an infographic. It is the model you reach for when the file is going to a client.
Nano Banana 2, otherwise known as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, shipped on 26 February 2026 and reshuffled the deck: roughly Pro quality at Flash speed and Flash price. Google immediately made it the default engine in the Gemini app, in Google Lens and Search AI Mode across 141 countries, and in Flow. Its public numbers: 512 px up to 4K, up to five characters kept consistent and fourteen objects held in a single workflow. A Lite variant followed, at around three cents an image.

The only official Google signal is the Gemini 4 pre-training run confirmed on 21 July 2026: no image model is attached to it, and the anonymous models currently under test on LMArena point to OpenAI, not Google.
Here is what can be verified. On 21 July 2026, Google publicly confirmed it had started its most ambitious pre-training run to date, for Gemini 4. Prediction markets recently gave it roughly an 85 percent chance of shipping before 30 November 2026.
