Stable Diffusion is still the open foundation of image generation: installed locally it costs only hardware and electricity, and its community produces thousands of derivatives. If you have the machine and the time, the marginal cost is unbeatable.

Outside local use, Stability bills per credit: $10 for 1,000 credits on DreamStudio, $0.01 to $0.06 an image through the API. Credit cost per image depends on the model, from 3.5 credits on lighter versions to 8 for Stable Image Ultra, a scale several user reports say was raised in August 2026.

Imaginode does not sell GPU time: it sells ready-to-use access to 48 recent models, many of which do not exist in open source, with a price shown before every generation and a node canvas instead of scripts.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stable Diffusion really free?

Locally, yes, aside from hardware and electricity. On DreamStudio and the Stability API it is billed per credit or per image.

Are open models as good as proprietary ones?

On many subjects, yes. On prompt fidelity, text in images and video with audio, recent proprietary models keep a clear lead.

Can I use Stable Diffusion inside Imaginode?

The catalogue exposes recent models chosen for their output; it does not include a local Stable Diffusion install. The two approaches complement each other more than they compete.
