Grok Imagine makes images and videos with sound in a single pass, up to 15 seconds long, and it can hold a character's face and voice across clips. It's fast, and if you already live on X, it's right there. The trouble starts at checkout.

On the x.ai pricing page we checked on October 26, 2026, the Free tier gets limited image generation, Plus at $8 a month adds images but no video, and video only shows up from Premium at $30 a month before tax. That allowance is also one weekly pool shared by chat, Imagine, voice and the bot, with Cursor bundled into the same subscription.

We picked six options. Each one fixes a specific reason people leave: paying for video one clip at a time, getting real free credits every day, or switching models when Grok can't get a shot right. We judged them on the cost of a clip, the free tier, what happens when a generation fails, and model choice. Imaginode is our product and sits first on the list, and we say so when another tool does a better job.

Why look for a Grok Imagine (xAI) alternative

  • Video is locked to the $30 a month Premium plan: Free and Plus don't include it (x.ai pricing, October 26, 2026).
  • Usage comes from one weekly pool shared by chat, Imagine, voice and the bot, and x.ai doesn't publish what a video costs out of that pool.
  • Many subscribers describe moderation as unpredictable, with prompts blocked without a reason and uneven results (Trustpilot reviews of grok.com, rated 1.4 out of 5 as of October 16, 2026).
  • The sexual deepfake scandal of winter 2025 to 2026, with investigations by Ofcom and Paris prosecutors, still hangs over the tool, which matters if you work for a brand or a school.

Each Grok Imagine (xAI) alternative in detail

1. Imaginode

Best for keeping Grok without the $30 plan

$7 with no subscription, or $17/mo

Imaginode runs xAI's models per generation, with no X or Grok subscription: Grok Imagine Video 1.5 costs 101 credits for 6 seconds at 720p, about $1.20, and 1.5 Lite costs 15 credits for 6 seconds at 480p. When a shot won't come out, you send the same prompt to Seedance 2.0 (60 credits for 5 seconds at 720p) or Veo 3.1 Lite without leaving the canvas. The price shows before you click, and a failed generation gets its credits back. It's still xAI's model, so don't expect looser content rules than on grok.com.

2. Google Flow (Veo 3.1)

Best for free Veo video every day

from $7.99/mo

Google Flow gives 50 credits a day with no subscription, usable on Veo 3.1 Lite (10 credits a clip) and Fast (20 credits), according to Google's help center. That makes it the most generous free way into video with sound. The catches are documented: video can be unavailable at peak hours, daily and monthly credits don't roll over, and threads on Google's developer forum report credits lost on failed generations. On the paid side, press reports put Google AI Plus at $4.99 since June 2026 (down from $7.99), and AI Pro with 1,000 monthly credits at $19.99.

3. Kling AI

Best for camera control

Free plan, from $10/mo

Kling AI is still the reference for camera moves and motion control, and Kling's own features land there before resellers get them. Third-party trackers list 66 free credits a day and a Standard plan at $10 a month, cut to $6.99 for the first month on promotion. The flip side is a 1.2 out of 5 Trustpilot score (October 2026), with repeated complaints about credits eaten by failed renders and slow queues. Try it on the free tier first.

4. Dreamina (CapCut)

Best for Seedance straight from ByteDance

Free plan

Dreamina, CapCut's generator, is the home of ByteDance's Seedance models, Seedance 2.5 included. On October 16, 2026, the official pricing page showed Basic at €1.39 for the first month, then €13.99 a month for 1,361 credits (pricing varies by region), and an official guide mentions free daily credits. Reviews mention an "AI" label on some paid downloads and accounts locked for "unusual activity". Promotions change often, so check the grid before you pay.

5. Hailuo AI (MiniMax)

Best for punchy clips at API prices

from $14.99/mo

Hailuo, from MiniMax, runs the H3 model, known for lively motion. On the API side, MiniMax's official price list shows $0.08 a second at 768P and $0.13 at 2K, in the same range as Grok Imagine Video 1.5. App subscriptions only show up in third-party trackers, where Standard has moved between $7.99 and $14.99 a month. Watch out for harsh Trustpilot reviews about billing, and for the lawsuit Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. Discovery filed against MiniMax in the US.

6. PixVerse

Best for daily posting on a small budget

Free plan, from $10/mo

PixVerse hands out free credits every day (60 to start, then 30 a day at 540p, according to Magic Hour) and its Standard plan starts around $10 a month. It's the closest match to Grok if you want to turn out short social clips quickly. Public reviews mention jobs stuck in the queue, moderation that sometimes overreaches, and free daily credits cut from 60 to 30 in 2026.

How to choose

First decide whether you're leaving Grok or just its subscription. If you like the model, Imaginode gives it to you per generation, and so does the xAI API if you code (from $0.02 a second on 1.5 Lite). If the model is what lets you down, run the same prompt through Seedance (Dreamina or Imaginode), Veo (Google Flow or Imaginode) and Kling.

Then look at volume. Under ten clips a week, the free tiers of Google Flow, Kling or PixVerse may be enough, with their peak hours and queues. Beyond that, compare the price of a 6 second clip rather than the price of the plan, and the calculator runs that math for a whole sequence of shots.

For a school, a brand or a client, also weigh the tool's reputation and what happens when a render fails. A failed generation refunded in credits, as on Imaginode, costs less than a cheaper plan that bills every miss. The pricing page lists the plans and the top-ups, whose credits never expire.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grok Imagine free?

Partly. As of October 26, 2026, x.ai's Free tier includes limited image generation and no video. Plus, at $8 a month, opens up images. Video needs Premium, at $30 a month before tax. Allowances refresh weekly and are shared with chat and voice.

What is the best free Grok Imagine alternative for video?

Google Flow, with 50 credits a day on Veo 3.1 Lite and Fast, is the strongest, as long as you avoid peak hours. Kling AI and PixVerse also give daily credits. Imaginode gives 15 credits at sign-up: enough for three images or one Grok 1.5 Lite clip, not for a series.

Can I use Grok Imagine without an X or Grok subscription?

Yes, two ways. The xAI API bills by the second (from $0.02 on 1.5 Lite, from $0.08 on 1.5) if you can code. Without code, Imaginode offers Grok Imagine Video 1.5, its Lite version and Grok Imagine Image 2.0 per generation, with the price shown before each click.

Is there a less censored alternative to Grok Imagine?

We don't rank tools on that. Every service applies its own rules, and on Imaginode each model keeps its maker's rules. When a harmless prompt gets blocked, rewording the scene or trying another model on the same prompt often fixes it.
