A website favicon or a Windows icon needs an ICO file. Start from a square PNG, ideally 256 pixels or more: the file produced holds the 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel sizes, and the browser or system picks the one it needs.
How to convert PNG to ICO
- 1Drop your PNG files in the box, or click to pick them. You can add several at once.
- 2ICO is already selected. Open the settings if you want to change the quality, the size or the background.
- 3Download each file, or everything at once as a .zip. Nothing was uploaded: the conversion happened on your device.
The formats
PNG
The web's lossless format. It keeps every pixel identical and supports transparency, which makes it the format of logos, screenshots and illustrations. For a photo, it often weighs three to five times more than a JPG.
ICO
The format of Windows icons and favicons, the small image of a website in the browser tab. One ICO file holds several sizes of the same image, from 16 to 256 pixels, and the system picks the one it needs.
Your files stay with you
The conversion runs in your browser, with your device's decoders. No file is uploaded, no copy is kept, and nobody but you sees your photos or videos. You can check it in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools: none of your files goes out.
Frequently asked questions
My image is not square, is that a problem?
No: it is centered in a square with transparent edges. For a readable favicon, a simple square symbol works better than a long logo.
How do I install it on my website?
Name the file favicon.ico and put it at the root of the site, or declare it with a link rel="icon" tag in the page.
Is the converter really free?
Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The conversion runs on your device and costs us nothing, so there is nothing to charge you for.
Are my files sent anywhere?
No. They are read and converted in your browser, then saved straight to your device. No server receives them.
Is there a maximum size?
The limit is your device's memory. Photos and audio files go through without trouble; for a video of several gigabytes, a computer does better than a phone.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, on iPhone and Android, in Safari, Chrome or Firefox. For video, an up-to-date browser is needed: it provides the decoders being used.
